7.1 Flow of Safe Childbirth Prayer and Reservation Method
Ikuta Shrine is one of the shrines known nationwide for “safe childbirth prayers.” It is common to perform safe childbirth prayers on the “Day of the Dog” in the fifth month of pregnancy. Because dogs are prolific breeders and have easy births, it has been believed since ancient times that praying for a safe childbirth on the Day of the Dog will ensure a healthy delivery for both mother and child.
🔸Flow of Safe Childbirth Prayer
Please visit the shrine according to your physical condition and the convenience of your family and relatives.
On the day of your visit, fill out an application form at the reception and pay the offering fee (approximately 10,000 yen).
Bring your maternity belt (Iwata-obi) to the prayer ceremony and receive prayers from the Shinto priest.
After the prayer ceremony, you will be given a safe childbirth amulet and other sacred talismans.
🔸Reservation Method
Ikuta Shrine does not generally accept reservations for safe childbirth prayers.
7.2 Etiquette and Gifts for the First Shrine Visit
The “first shrine visit” is an important ceremony to thank the gods for the safe birth of a baby and to pray for their healthy growth.
Traditionally, it is performed on the 31st day after birth for boys and the 33rd day for girls, but recently, more and more people are choosing a date flexibly according to their family’s convenience and the season.
🔸Flow of the First Shrine Visit
Apply for the prayer for the first shrine visit at the reception and pay the offering fee (approximately 10,000 yen).
It is common for the baby to be dressed in a “celebratory garment” (such as a white silk kimono or a baby’s chrysalis) and held by the grandmother or mother during the ceremony.
After the prayer, a sacred amulet and charm are given, which are taken home and enshrined.
🔸Gifts
At Ikuta Shrine, families who receive the prayer for the first shrine visit are given sacred amulets, charms, and commemorative gifts to pray for the baby’s healthy growth. There are also photo spots where you can take commemorative photos, making it perfect for creating memories to celebrate life’s milestones.
7.3 Points to Note When Visiting with Family
When visiting with a baby or for a pregnant woman praying for a safe delivery, it’s reassuring to keep a few points in mind.
・Choose a time to avoid crowds
The shrine is especially crowded on the Day of the Dog and auspicious days, so weekdays or early mornings are recommended.
・Consider your attire
Formal attire is generally required when attending a prayer ceremony. Preparing a celebratory outfit for the baby will further enhance the formality.
・Prepare for breastfeeding and diaper changes
While there are places to rest on the shrine grounds, it’s reassuring to be prepared to use nearby facilities if needed.
・Photography etiquette
Photography is permitted on the shrine grounds, but it is often prohibited during prayer ceremonies, so check beforehand.
By making these preparations, you can have a more relaxed and memorable day for your family when praying for a safe delivery or visiting the shrine.
